There are 2 ways to join ISRO: 1. GATE and 2. ISRO ICRB.

Every year, ISRO typically publishes its first recruitment advertisement specifically for candidates applying through GATE. ๐Ÿซ Exam Day Reality: My Delhi Center Experience (What No One Tells You)

If you are writing the ICRB exam for the first time, you need to know that the physical exam experience is very different from standard online exams like GATE.

  • The Center: Unlike the fancy TCS iON digital zones you get for GATE, ISRO centers are most probably going to be standard schools. When my center came for Delhi, it was a regular school building.
  • The Crowd & Checking: Be prepared for multiple checking stages. There will usually be two main lines to enter. You will have to go through biometric eye-checking (Iris scan) and manual ID verification before you are allowed inside.Donr forget to carry your Orignal AADHAR card and your passport size photo. 
  • Finding Your Class: Since it's a school, you will be given a roll number at the entrance, and you have to physically walk through the corridors to find the specific classroom assigned to your roll number block.
  • Phone : There are rarely official locker rooms. Private stalls outside might try to charge you money just to keep your phone.  Just switch it off and keep it deep inside your own bag and leave the bag where instructed. Lol, no one takes it, save your money!

๐Ÿ“š The Real ISRO Syllabus: PYQ Subject Weightage

To give you a clear roadmap, I broke down all 80 questions asked in the core exam (All Departments) to create a detailed subject-wise weightage analysis. This breakdown will tell you exactly what to prepare and what to skip. You will see which subjects carry the maximum weightage, which ones you can safely ignore, and most importantly, which topics are completely outside the standard GATE syllabus.

1. Mechanical Engineering (ME)

The heavy focus remains on thermal sciences and fluid mechanics.

๐Ÿง  How to Prepare for ISRO ICRB (this is just brief guide you can read in detail - HERE)

  • Master Hand Calculations (NO CALCULATOR ALLOWED): This is the biggest shock for GATE students. Virtual calculators are NOT allowed. You must practice solving complex equations by hand. If a calculation takes more than 1.5 minutes, drop it immediately and move on.
  • Focus on Memory & Bare Minimum Formulas: Unlike GATE, which tests tricky, multi-step applications, ISRO tests your speed and memory. You need to know the direct formulas. Create a "Mistake Copy" to note down only the formulas you keep forgetting during mock tests, and revise it every night before bed.
  • Study ISRO-Favorite Allied Subjects: As seen in the videos by ISRO scientists, the panel loves asking questions related to space applications. For instance, if you are ECE, do not ignore Microwave Engineering, Satellite Communication, and Radar. These hold massive weightage compared to standard GATE subjects.
  • Source Material: Your primary focus should be a thorough revision of your GATE notes along with practicing Previous Year Questions (PYQs) for 1-mark questions from GATE and ESE. Check out the Best Standard Books for GATE 2027.
  • Aptitude Guessing (Zero Negative Marks): Part B features 20 questions worth 20 marks with ZERO negative marking. Practice aptitude for 30 minutes daily, but remember to attempt 100% of these questions on exam day.
  • Syllabus Coverage: From the data above, you know what to study. ISRO's syllabus is not the same as the GATE syllabus. You also understood what to skip.
  • Source Material: Your primary focus should be a thorough revision of your GATE notes along with practicing Previous Year Questions (PYQs) for only 1 mark from GATE and ESE.   • Focus on Reading Speed: Many questions may appear lengthy but are actually single-liner concepts, making your reading speed critical to finishing the paper.
  • Aptitude Section (Part B): Part B features 15 questions worth 20 marks with zero negative marking. Practice aptitude for 30 to 60 minutes daily because these questions are less repetitive than technical ones. And 0 negative marks means you can guess!
  • Time-Traps & Calculators: Calculators are strictly prohibited in the exam. If a calculation is taking more than 1 to 1.5 minutes, drop it immediately and move on so you do not miss easier questions waiting at the end. Time should be your 1st priority.
  • Target Score: Maximize your written score instead of just aiming for the minimum qualifying cut-off; a high written score can offset potential weaknesses in the interview stage.

Beyond the central ICRB exam, ISRO has multiple individual centers across India that recruit scientists directly every year. These standalone notifications are often published only on specific department websites rather than the main ISRO portal.

Hidden ISRO Opportunities

Let's be real: the main ISRO ICRB exam can be an uphill battle if you are from an allied branch like Aerospace or certain ECE specializations. The syllabus often heavily favors core branches, meaning you have to compete against students who have been studying those exact core subjects for four straight years.

This is exactly why these individual center recruitments are a golden second opportunity. Even if the central ICRB exam doesn't go as planned, these standalone tests are your best backup. The major advantage here is that these exams often feature questions tailored specifically to your department's domain. This levels the playing field, making the paper much more manageable for allied branch students compared to the generalized ICRB exam.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Direct Walk-ins & Easier Tests
Sometimes these individual centers conduct direct walk-in interviews. Other times, they hold their own written tests—which are generally much easier than the main ISRO ICRB exam and have way less competition.
